What´s behind Stop Finning
Stop Finning was founded in 2006 after the issue about sharkfinning has caused for worldwide furor. In the beginning, Stop Finning was a platform which spread informations, press releases and (inter)national petitions with the subject of “shark finning”. Until the end of 2012 was fought primarily online for shark protection but that changed in 2013.
Meanwhile, the organization Stop Finning has the task of halting the sales market of shark products in Germany. Now we want to actively fight for a ban on shark products in Germany. Due to events in 2013, we increased our visibility already, start actions and campaigns. An association founded to take place in the first quarter of 2014. Until that are currently 7 active members to prepare for planned events, activities and campaigns. So stay tuned, it will be very exciting.

Achievements of Stop Finning
But even without an association, we have been able to report some great successes. After the second quarter of 2013 the Rewe Group (ReWe and Penny markets in Germany) had again taken “Schillerlocken” in cans of “Rügenfisch” to their range. With petitions, social media and direct emailingwe were able to bring the responsibles to emphasize the Schillerlocken out of the range . All this happened within a few days as shows that even small groups can achieve big. To date we watch the markets and could find no further “Schillerlocken”.
But what you can do already?
It does not always need an organization like Stop Finning to do something for shark protection. Every single person has something to contribute to the protection of sharks by deliberately omitted for example on the purchase of shark products. Unfortunately, there are still supermarkets, local fishmonger and numerous restaurants in Germany which still have shark products for offer. Whether the Asian “delicacy” shark fin soup or the north German “Schillerlocken” from the local fishmonger or fresh sharkmeat from the supermarket. In addition to dispensing each of you can do educational work to restaurant managers, fishmongers and supermarket and explain why the sale of an endangered species from extinction can not be supported anymore. For the shark fishing there is no sustainability.
