Incredibly, as many as 100 million sharks are killed each year – that is a jaw-dropping 270,000 sharks fished each and every day. This is pushing many species to the brink of extinction. Urgent action is needed if this wonderfully diverse yet increasingly threatened group of species is to survive.

Most sharks serve as top predators at the pinnacle of the marine food pyramid, and so play a critical role in ocean ecosystems. Directly or indirectly they regulate the natural balance of these ecosystems, at all levels, and so are an integral part of them. As they usually hunt older, weaker or sick prey, they also help to keep the prey population in good condition. Thus, they allow the healthy and strong animals that are more fit to reproduce to pass on their genes. The effects of removing sharks from the ocean ecosystems, although complex and rather unpredictable, are likely to be ecologically and economically damaging.

We know that some things are being done to help save our Sharks, but lets be honest not enough is getting done as a whole, We need to step it up and we need to protect our Sharks not just some, but ALL Sharks. Sharks are beautiful animals and are very important to the Oceans Eco-Systems and its up to us to help them, if left to the worlds leaders nothing will ever happen, things only happen when the people stand up in unity. Lets Stand Up… And its not just finning its Longlining as well, it also has to stop to protect the sharks and the oceans. Millions of sharks are killed each year just for a fin, disgusting, is it not ?. Millions of lives lost for fins so they can make soup its just wrong 100% wrong. But the worst part is still to come, using a hook they drag the shark onto the boat, its kicked and dragged they then HACK off its fins while the animal is alive and once they are done the shark is thrown back in the water ALIVE and left to sink and drown and all this is done by fellow human beings, its disgusting… I have one thing to say…. The Guam Senate will vote on Thursday to pass Bill No. 44-31 to ban the possession, sale, and distribution of shark and shark parts. Since the bill was introduced late last month, over 14,500 people around the world have signed a petition and 330 supporters from 57 different countries have written unique letters. Additionally, local Guam students have submitted thousands of signatures and hundreds of letters as part of their Shark Tsunami campaign.

There is another petition started to ban shark finning & fishing in Thailand – Thailand is now ranked 10th as a country that catches and fins sharks!

This petition implores Thailand to stop the fishing of sharks at our local dive sites and the banning of finning in there local waters and around the dive sites.

The number of manta rays that exist worldwide is unknown. They used to be hunted commercially for their liver oil and skin. The hunters would kill them by harpooning them from small boats in eastern Australia and the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California). Today, they continue to be hunted in Mexico, Indonesia, and the Philippines, where their meat is considered a delicacy. Heavy fishing in Mexico has caused manta populations to collapse. Additionally, fishing efforts in the Philippines have been growing in the past decade enabling local markets to expand to national and international market places. There is an increasing concern about the sustainability of such a fishery. Hunters who are economically dependent on the fishery refute any conservation measures to limit the fishery.

The Chilean Government has taken a step forward in marine conservation by presenting a law project to protect sharks by banning finning. The initiative has the support of parliamentarians and is driven by an international NGO, aims to end the growing practice of finning or “aleteo” in Chile. Shark finning worldwide has made a 90% decline in shark populations and that some 100 million individuals are caught and killed each year. In Chile there is sufficient information showing that 1 in 3 blue sharks caught, suffer from this type of mutilation; this means that about 150,000 sharks are finned each year in Chilean waters.

Chile is one of the few countries where illegal shark finning is NOT oe even promoted the practice

Up to 73 million sharks are killed every year — mainly for their fins, which are used in the Asian delicacy shark fin soup. In the wasteful practice of “shark finning,” fishermen slice off the valuable fins of the shark and discard the bodies at sea, where the sharks slowly die.

Shark finning is banned in U.S. waters, but it still affects shark populations worldwide. Many sharks now face extinction.

Fortunately, we have the opportunity to save sharks in one more part of the world: Guam. But we must act now!

A new bill would ban the sale and possession of shark fins in Guam, greatly deterring motivation to practice shark finning in the area. The hearing for this bill is set for Tuesday, February 1.

Ask Guam Natural Resources Committee Chair Senator Rory Respicio to support this bill and help save the world’s sharks!
